A school neuropsychological evaluation is typically requested when there are concerns that something more complicated than learning disabilities is negatively impacting a child’s overall functioning. Possible neuro-developmental disabilitites, and complex medical history are considered and evaluated. Neuropsychological tests evaluate functioning in a number of areas including: intelligence, executive functions (such as planning, attention, memory,) language, perception, sensorimotor functions, and social emotional status. The areas addressed in the evaluation are determined by the referral question (what are the questions the parent and school want answered), the child’s symptoms, and observations made during interview and testing. Neuropsychological evaluations are typically more thorough, and usually take more testing sessions to complete.
